Tooling & Mold Development

At KingStar, tooling and mold development is the foundation of all our products—including stainless steel insulated water bottles, tumblers, mugs, cooler boxes, cooler jugs, dog bowls, hip flasks, can coolers, and coffee pots we manufacture for OEM and ODM buyers worldwide. From product conception, manufacturability analysis, mold design, sample testing, and mass production, we control the whole tooling chain.

Whether you need a brand-new stainless steel water bottle mold, a custom tumbler mold, or a multi-cavity family mold for a complete drinkware line, we focus on stable mass production from the beginning of design: ensuring uniform wall thickness, sealing and leakage prevention, and consistent quality from batch 1 to batch 10,000.

Tooling & Mold Development: Key to Water Bottles

From concept design to stable mass production

For stainless steel insulated water bottles, tumblers, and mugs, molds are not just tools for shaping. It directly determines the vacuum insulation effect, thread bite, sealing performance of the lid, product surface texture, wall thickness uniformity, drop resistance, and quality control stability of long-term shipment, ensuring brand reputation.

A poorly developed mold may pass the audit, but it is easy to go wrong in mass production. Common faults include unstable vacuum insulation performance, obvious weld marks on the surface, uneven thread tolerance, water leakage, deformation of the bottom, uneven adhesion of powder coating, and high scrap rates. These issues cost brands time, money, and market trust.

KingStar approaches tooling as a production system, not a one-time sample. Before cutting steel, we will evaluate the product structure, material selection, material shrinkage, gate position, cooling water channel design, demoulding slope, and assembly tolerance. For OEM/ODM customization projects, this means that your products are designed for manufacturing from the beginning.

Our Tooling & Mold Development Capabilities

We have a complete set of mold processing capabilities, covering product manufacturability analysis, 3D mold design, electrode design, CNC machining, EDM, wire cutting, mold assembly, mold trial, sample testing, and mold modification and repair until it is handed over to mass production.

For stainless steel vacuum products, we focus on controlling the mold accuracy of the inner and outer shell, the reliability of the vacuum port, thread and lid matching, bottom embossing, handle integration, and the adaptability of the mold and the surface treatment process. As for plastic parts, we will choose the corresponding mold scheme of rotational molding, injection molding, and blow molding according to the product structure and order volume.

End-to-End Mold Engineering for Insulated Product Lines

From concept validation and mold design to CNC machining and sample testing, we deliver custom tooling for rotomolded coolers, insulated tumblers, and beverage containers, supporting reliable mass production.

Tooling & Mold Development Process for OEM/ODM Programs

tooling mold development process.

Each project follows a set of standardized mold development processes. The core goal is simple: from product conception to stable mass production, try to avoid repeated mold changes. This process is suitable for all kinds of stainless steel products. For plastic parts with simple structure, tooling lead time can be faster. For complex vacuum drinkware with threaded lids, handles, powder coating, or multi-color logos, more validation steps are included.

FAQs About KingStar Tooling & Mold Development

We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions to make it easier for you to find the information you need. Whether you’re looking for details about our tooling & mold development capabilities, you can quickly access helpful answers here.

For a new water bottle project, we adopt a set of standardized eight-step mold processes: inquiry and technical review, DFM and product optimization, mold design and approval, tooling manufacturing, trial molding and sample validation, mold correction and T2, sample approval and pilot run, and mass production handover.

The biggest advantage of this process is that all links are completed in our factory. You don’t have to wait for the outsourcing mold factory to schedule; reviewing drawings, designing molds, proofing and testing molds, modifying molds, and delivering mass production are all followed up by the same team. The communication link is shorter, which can also reduce the risk of information transmission errors between links.

Buyers need to prepare these materials before the project starts:

  • Product drawings or reference samples
  • Target capacity and thermal insulation performance requirements
  • Material selection, such as 304 or 316 stainless steel.
  • Logo technology and surface treatment
  • Estimated order quantity and planned time to market

After the information is confirmed, we usually give feedback on the feasibility assessment, preliminary mold scheme and quotation within 1-2 days. Complete manufacturability analysis and mold structure planning in the next 2-5 days; mold design confirmation usually takes 3-7 days. The mold processing cycle itself is 15-30 days, depending on the complexity of the product.

Mold cost is not a fixed figure; it is affected by many factors. Knowing these variables in advance, you can control the budget well before the project starts.

Cost FactorWhat Affects ItHow to Control It
Cavity number1-cavity vs. 2, 4, 8, or 16+ cavitiesChoose cavity number based on annual volume, not sample quantity
Product structureSingle-wall vs. double-wall vacuum, wide mouth vs. narrow mouth, handle or no handleFreeze the structure before mold design approval
Steel selectionStandard mold steel vs. high-polish or high-durability steelMatch steel to production volume and surface finish requirement
Thread and lid complexitySimple screw lid vs. flip lid, straw lid, or leak-proof capSimplify lid structure if the market allows
Surface finishPowder coating, painting, matte, glossy, metallic, rubberizedConfirm finish before mold polishing stage
Mold typeBottle shell mold, vacuum shell mold, lid mold, handle mold, family moldCombine compatible parts into a family mold where possible
Multi-cavity or family moldHigher upfront cost, lower unit cost at volumeUse multi-cavity only when annual volume supports it

The single-cavity bottle mold with a simple structure has a lower cost; If it is a multi-cavity mold with complicated threads and handles, or if it needs to adapt to the powder spraying process, the cost will be higher. The most effective way to control the cost is to determine the product structure and estimate the order quantity as soon as possible. In many cases, it is not the initial design that raises the mold cost and prolongs the delivery time, but the product structure is repeatedly changed in the later stage.

The situation of each project is different. We will review your drawings, target capacity, material, logo process, and order quantity before giving the quotation. You can get the details of mold parameters and a quotation within 24 hours.

Standard tooling lead time is 25-35 days. The cycle of vacuum drinkware mold with a complex structure or multi-cavity mold will be extended to 35-50 days.

After the first mold trial (T1) is completed, the samples can be delivered in 3-7 days; it takes 7-15 days for a complete sample to be fully functional. After the samples are confirmed, mass production can be started in 15-30 days.

What is really easy to delay the progress is not the regular cycle but the temporary modification of the product in the later stage. Once the mold design is finalized and the structure is changed, the construction period may be delayed by several days or even weeks. Want to stabilize the project rhythm? We give some suggestions:

  • Lock the product structure finally before the mold design is confirmed.
  • Try to adjust only the contents, such as the logo, packaging, and color, during the mold trial stage.
  • Finalize the structure of the bottle lid, handle, and thread before the first mold test.
  • Before small batch trial production, confirm the sealed samples.

If the launch date of your product has been fixed, please let us know at the beginning of the inquiry. We can reverse the mold plan with the target time to market and identify potential risks in advance.

DFM means Design for Manufacturing. Before formal mold opening, we will evaluate the wall thickness, draft angle, shrinkage, gate position, cooling water channel design, thread tolerance, vacuum structure, assembly, and packaging restrictions.

The core of DFM is to check the hidden dangers in advance before the problem turns into a high cost of mold modification. In practice, it can avoid many problems that are only exposed in the mass production stage:

  • The vacuum insulation performance is unstable.
  • There are obvious weld marks on the product surface.
  • Uneven thread tolerance, causing water leakage in the lids.
  • The bottom is deformed after vacuumizing.
  • uneven adhesion of powder spraying
  • High rejection rate in mass production.

For stainless steel vacuum products, DFM will also consider the matching degree of inner and outer shell molds, the reliability of the vacuum port, the matching of screw thread and bottle lids, bottom stamping, integral molding of handle, and the adaptability to various surface processes.

For plastic parts, DFM will judge whether rotational molding, injection molding, or blow molding is more suitable according to product structure and order quantity.

Whether the sample can be mass-produced or not, DFM plays a decisive role. It reduces repeated mold modification, shortens the delivery cycle, and ensures the thermal insulation effect, leak-proof performance, and appearance quality during mass production.

The mold can be customer-owned. At the same time, we also provide mold storage, maintenance, and return production services.

For OEM/ODM buyers, stable and continuous supply is very important. The control of the mold is in your hands, and we will keep maintenance records. Subsequent returns can directly arrange production without waiting for the external mold factory to schedule. If you need to transfer to another factory for production later, the whole set of molds and related technical data can be handed over together.

The supporting services we provide include:

  • The molds are kept in our facility.
  • Regular maintenance and cleaning of molds.
  • Mold maintenance and parts replacement.
  • Use the original equipment to directly arrange the return production.
  • Handover of complete data, including mold drawings, process parameters and inspection standards.

In other words, your mold will not be bound to a third-party mold factory. It will be managed by a special person as part of your production project, and there is no need to wait in line for the production of returning orders.

The biggest hidden danger of mold development is that the sample is qualified, but the mass production is out of order. Our solution is to lock the process parameters after small batch trial production and implement the same set of inspection standards from batch 1 to batch 10,000.

StageQuality Control

No problem. We support silk screen, pad printing, heat transfer, laser engraving, embossing, and in-mold labeling. Surface treatment can be powder coating, painting, matte, bright, metallic texture, rubberized, anti-slip texture, and anti-UV coating.

When actually landing, it is important to consider the surface adhesion and color difference stability.

For arc-shaped cup bodies such as water bottles and tumblers, the position and size of the logo will conform to the curvature of the curved surface to ensure that the printed pattern is still clear on the curved surface, unlike the flat process. Before mass production, all surface coatings will be tested for adhesion. The color masterbatch has been calibrated, and the color difference of the first batch to 10,000 batches of goods is controlled within the standard range.

You can make your own brand with the first order. Finalize the packaging plan before production, and the first wholesale goods can be directly branded with your brand. We also support customized color boxes, bar code labels, complete packages that can be directly put on shelves for retail, and full-link private brand solutions.

For OEM/ODM buyers, this means you can develop a complete drinkware line with consistent branding across water bottles, tumblers, mugs, cooler jugs, and coffee pots.
